Chapter nine

Sharpening Your Public Engagement

The previous chapter discussed how labels in contemporary social and political debates can easily become flashpoints. Social media is not only a place to engage in debate for its own sake, but is also increasingly a platform from which to pursue multiple types of public engagement, including social and political activism. This chapter discusses various engagement strategies and analyzes the dilemmas and dynamics around activism that play out on social media, even when you may not intend your contributions to be viewed in an activist light. These include the dynamics of outrage culture, the tendency toward “slacktivism,” the practices of “virtue signaling,” shaming, the debate over “calling out” versus “calling in,” “tone policing,” and the charge of “white fragility.” The chapter concludes with a discussion of best practices for those who are helping an organization enhance its social media presence.
